The Philippines is one of only two countries in Asia where English is an official language โ meaning all university instruction is in English, all signage is in English, and all daily life functions in a language Nigerian students already speak fluently. It is also home to some of Asia's most affordable accredited medical, nursing, and allied health programmes. For Nigerian students targeting healthcare careers, the Philippines is a genuinely underutilised option.
The University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines Manila, Cebu Institute of Medicine, and AUF Medical School all offer English-taught medicine and nursing programmes that are CHED-accredited. Philippine nursing graduates pass the NCLEX (USA) and NMC (UK) examinations at internationally competitive rates. For Nigerian families targeting nursing careers in the USA, UK, or Middle East, the Philippines is a cost-effective preparation route.
Philippine nurses are the single largest group of internationally trained nurses in the USA and UK. The educational system is specifically structured around NCLEX and NMC preparation. A Nigerian student who completes nursing in the Philippines graduates with a degree purpose-built for the international healthcare labour market.
For Nigerian students going abroad for the first time, cultural adjustment is a real factor. English as an official language, a Christian-majority population, a warm tropical climate, and a friendly culture make the Philippines a gentler first international experience than studying in Germany, France, or even the UK.

Book My Philippines Consultation โPhilippine nursing graduates can apply for NMC registration in the UK. They must meet NMC's requirements: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (6.5 in all bands from 2023), complete the Computer Based Test (CBT), and pass the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Many Philippine-trained nurses successfully complete this pathway โ it is demanding but well-established.
A realistic first-year budget for a BSN nursing programme is PHP 270,000โ490,000 (approximately ยฃ4,000โยฃ7,200), covering tuition and living costs. This is the most affordable nursing pathway in the ZSR portfolio.
Most Philippine universities do not require IELTS for admission since English is the medium of instruction. However, if your goal is UK NMC registration after graduation, you will need IELTS Academic 7.0 at that stage โ ZSR advises starting IELTS preparation during your studies, not after graduation.
Student visa holders in the Philippines are not generally permitted to work. This is the same constraint as Thailand. ZSR advises on this explicitly โ the Philippines is primarily suitable for students whose families can fund the full programme.
